The Sussex area, covers a wide area by being two counties joined together of east and west, with a vast array of military vehicles between us. Many owning WW2 vehicles, onto the large range of post war vehicles, which include many that have been kitted out to their original use of either being personnel carriers, stowed ambulances and military radio equipment.

The main Sussex meeting is held at the Plough on Plumpton Green which has a strong link with the 2nd World War. Chailey airfield was one of 82 possible sites surveyed for Advanced Landing Ground in 1942,In 1944 it was to become one of the most important of all, playing host to the controlling Sector for nine Squadrons in three Wings, based at Chailey, Coolham and Selsey. These three Wings were to provide low cover to the invading forces establishing the Normandy Beach-heads

Worst of all, the Plough Inn had to go as it fell within the funnel area of the main runway. A first world war army hut, which stood near the cottages, was dismantled carefully and re-erected on a piece of land at Plumpton Fiveways donated for the purpose by a local farmer named Norwood. It was not until 1956 that this was replaced with a permanent purpose-built structure as it now stands.

At the side of the pub is a memorial to the RAF pilots who were based there, mainly being Polish,

Alongside the pub there is a lovely field which we are able to use for camping and summer outdoor meetings.

There are only a few of us that meet on a regular basis at the pub, we have done a few Sunday road runs mainly starting off from “Dave’s yard” and finish up at either the pub and on other occasions at the Lavender Line Steam railway where a warm welcome is given each time.

There are also a few smaller groups that meet up on different days in various areas of Sussex, but when the Cuckoo fair at Laughton, Ringmer Steam Fair or Bells & Bugles are held we all join up and give the ‘locals’ a good display.

We have also helped out with providing transport for a wedding, and also for schools history projects.

Like all the areas, the people who come along have a vast array of knowledge and if one person can’t help you with something then there is always someone who knows someone that can.
