Sat 25th October                 Hothfield History Society's exhibition OPEN FROM 11.00-16.00
The Hothfield History Society is a small voluntary gathering who are looking into various aspects of the history of the area.  Hothfield Manor was a large army base for the Second World War and vehicles were parked all over what is now the village; Jon has discovered that tanks were parked along what is now known as 'Coach Drive' (very close to the village hall). We also know that soldiers were billeted in the nearby Ripper's Cross Farmhouse and for fun used to fire their guns over the house where the current owner occasionally finds spent casings and bullets. Hothfield Common also housed a large collection of nissen huts used by the Army during WWII. Our exhibition will have lots of photos and maps but we feel that it would be greatly enhanced by some real artefacts (as well as bullets and casings!) such as a few WWII vehicles.  The exhibition will be held on 25th October (from 11:00 to 16:00) at the Village Hall where there is a tarmac car park; the hall also backs onto farmland owned by Jon Coles and he has kindly agreed that this field can also be used to park military vehicles (and any other old vehicles that we might be able to persuade to come along). This field is rarely wet so even if the weather is bad in October we still expect that vehicles can be safely parked on it. Inside the Hall we will have a number of themes and different sections, one of which will be based on Hothfield during WWII and it would be great if visitors could then be led from the display to a collection of real vehicles and military artefacts.  If your members would like an indoor area for any artefacts or displays of your own then I'd be pleased to  extend our exhibition area. The members of the History Society will probably be in costumes of various sorts (school teacher etc.) and we know that many of your members like to dress in the appropriate uniforms of the day. Inside the hall there will also be refreshments and toilets. If you require any further
